What’s the Solution for Uncomfortable Lenses?

A simple guide to choosing the right Multi-Purpose Solution

If your eyes feel uncomfortable, dry, or irritated after applying your contact lenses, your contact lens fit may not be the only factor. One important part of the contact lens system is often overlooked: the contact lens solution.

Responsible contact lens wear is more than just mastering the insertion and removal of properly fit lenses. A consistent routine plays an important role in keeping lenses clean and ready for optimal daily wear. At the center of this routine is the multi-purpose solution itself. Understanding how a contact lens solution supports daily lens care and impacts ocular surface health can help patients make informed choices and feel more confident in their routine.

Why does a multi-purpose solution matter for daily lens care?

Contact lenses sit directly on the ocular surface and interact intimately with its multiple facets throughout the day. During wear, lenses can collect deposits from tears, environmental particles, and lens handling debris. These are normal parts of contact lens use, but can complicate consistent contact lens wear.

A multi-purpose solution is designed to support daily lens care through several essential steps:

  • Proper rinse before insertion and after removal
  • Disinfection between wear
  • Safe storage

Using a suitable contact lens solution each day removes debris, deposits, and microorganisms from the lens surface, which lowers the risk of irritation and infection and keeps your lenses suitable for daily wear. The key to a consistent routine is following the same care steps repeatedly.

Why must a multi-purpose solution be used daily?

Lens comfort is influenced by many factors, including the condition of the lens surface, environmental variables, and whether a care routine is consistently followed. During wear, lenses may collect deposits from tears, environmental particles, and handling. Remaining diligent with the recommended care routine helps clean, rinse, disinfect and store lenses, so they remain optimal for consistent wear. Using a solution as directed and maintaining a regular routine helps keep lenses clean by reducing debris build up. This supports a stable wearing experience throughout each day.

The most important step in removing debris is to gently rub the lens to loosen and lift deposits, which allows the solution to do its job completely. Afterwards, rinse the lens and place it in fresh solution to disinfect overnight.

What does a good lens hygiene routine look like?

STEP 1 – Clean Daily:

Place 3 drops of solution on each side of the contact lens. Gently rub both sides of the lens with your forefinger for 15–20 seconds. If the lens is not heavily soiled, no additional cleaner is required.

STEP 2 – Rinse:

Remove surface debris by rinsing thoroughly.

STEP 3 – Disinfect/Store:

Place rinsed contact lenses in lens case and fill with fresh solution. Soak for at least six hours before wearing it. Only when you follow all the above steps are your lenses ready to wear. If debris remains on contact lens, rinse with the solution. If not wearing contact lenses immediately, store them in an unopened lens case. Do not store your lenses in ordinary saline in place of multi-purpose solution. Saline solution will not disinfect. Re-disinfect after 7 days of non-use.

STEP 4 – Conditioning:

Only for gas permeable (GP) contact lenses (!) To improve comfort and wettability a few drops may be applied to both surfaces of the lens prior to insertion on the eye.

Important Reminders:

  • Never use tap water at any point in this process.
  • Replace your lens case regularly, either when you open a new solution bottle or every three months, whichever comes first.
  • Let case air dry between uses.
  • Do not store your lenses in saline solution in place of a multi-purpose solution. Saline solution will not disinfect.
  • Re-disinfect lenses after 7 days of non-use.
  • If you notice redness, pain, or unusual discharge, remove the lens and contact your eye care provider immediately.
